Finding accommodation in Toulouse
Finding accommodation is an important part of preparing for your stay and can sometimes be challenging.
This page aims to provide you with information and guidance throughout your search by presenting the different accommodation options available, along with useful advice and resources to help you find a place to live.
Good to know
The University of Toulouse does not have its own university residences. As a partner of the Crous, it has access to a limited number of reserved rooms in Crous university residences.
- The University does not have emergency accommodation or temporary rooms that can be provided to students experiencing housing difficulties.
- As the number of reserved rooms is limited, the University cannot provide accommodation to all international students.
- Submitting an accommodation request to the University does not guarantee that you will be allocated a Crous room.
We therefore strongly recommend that you start looking for accommodation as early as possible and consider several housing options at the same time.
Accommodation options
Several accommodation options are available in Toulouse, depending on your situation, the length of your stay and your budget. Below, you will find the main options available during your stay: Crous university residences, private-sector accommodation, and short- or medium-term accommodation.
Prices and eligibility requirements vary depending on the type of accommodation. We recommend starting your search early and considering several options at the same time.
Important information: Crous accommodation 26-27
The University of Toulouse's allocation of reserved Crous accommodation is currently full.
As both the main and waiting lists have reached full capacity, we are no longer able to accept new accommodation requests from Master 2 (M2) “free mover” students for the first semester of the 2026–2027 academic year.
Crous university residences
The University of Toulouse has access to a limited number of rooms in Crous university residences in Toulouse.
As rents are generally more affordable than in the private rental market, demand is particularly high and the number of rooms available is not sufficient to meet all requests.
Who can apply?
Erasmus+ and exchange students are given priority:
- students participating in an Erasmus+ mobility programme;
- students coming to Toulouse as part of an exchange programme;
- students enrolled in the second year of a Master’s degree (M2);
- newly enrolled PhD students.
Students enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree programme (Licence) or the first year of a Master’s degree (M1) are not eligible for the University’s allocation of Crous accommodation.
Please note: if you are an international student at the University of Toulouse, all requests for accommodation in a Crous residence must be submitted through the University’s Accommodation Service. Do not apply or contact the Crous de Toulouse directly to request accommodation. Accommodation for international students is allocated by the Crous only upon request from the University’s Accommodation Service. Therefore, if the Accommodation Service informs you that no rooms are available or that applications are closed, contacting the Crous directly will not enable you to obtain accommodation.
How to apply?
If you meet the eligibility requirements, complete the accommodation application form and send it to the Accommodation Service together with:
- a copy of your identity document;
- your certificate of enrolment or invitation letter.
Don't have an INE number?
An INE number is required to book accommodation with the Crous. If you do not have one, you can obtain one by creating an account on MesServices.etudiant.gouv.fr: please refer to the Crous tutorial for instructions on how to proceed.Erasmus+ students: you must first be officially nominated by your home university. Once your nomination has been received and processed, the University of Toulouse will send you the information you need to prepare for your stay, along with instructions on how to apply for Crous accommodation. There is no need to contact the Accommodation Service before this stage.
Important: submitting an application does not guarantee that you will be allocated Crous accommodation or that you will receive your preferred type of accommodation (room or studio).
When should you submit your application?
For arrivals in September: your application must be submitted no later than 10 April. If you are allocated accommodation, you will receive your admission notice between late June and early July, along with instructions on how to book your accommodation.
Stays of less than 3 months cannot be considered.
For arrivals in the second semester: applications are processed on a rolling basis, subject to availability. We recommend submitting your application at least six weeks before your arrival. Your stay must be longer than one month.
Indicative prices
Prices vary depending on the residence and the type of accommodation available. The type of accommodation allocated is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
Current monthly rates are:
- room of approximately 9 m²: €262 to €268;
- studio of 16 to 18 m²: €318 to €422.
Length of stay and renewal
Accommodation is allocated for a maximum period of one academic year. Unless a renewal has been authorised, you must vacate your accommodation no later than 31 August.
Exceptions may apply in particular to:
- students participating in certain international cooperation programmes (ADIUT, Erasmus+, double-degree programmes);
- recipients of certain Campus France excellence scholarships;
- students whose thesis defence, internship or final examinations take place in September.
In the latter case, an extension may be granted until 30 September at the latest, subject to availability.
What is included in Crous accommodation?
Rooms and studios include:
- a single bed and mattress;
- a desk and chair;
- a private bathroom with a shower, toilet and washbasin.
Accommodation with a private kitchen area also includes a refrigerator and cooking hobs.
Bed linen, towels and kitchen utensils are not provided. Remember to plan for purchasing these items when you arrive.

What budget should you plan for?
Rent varies depending on the type and size of the accommodation, its location and the length of your stay.
When you first move in, you should plan for higher expenses during the first month to cover your first month’s rent, the security deposit, home insurance and any application or agency fees.
As a general guide, you should budget approximately €1,200 for your initial moving-in expenses, followed by at least €500 per month for rent (2025 estimates), depending on the accommodation you choose.
When should you start looking?
Finding accommodation can take time, particularly in the run-up to the start of the academic year. We recommend starting your search at least two months before you arrive in France, and as early as possible if you are planning to arrive in September.

Other accommodation platforms
Mandatory procedure and estimated budget
When you rent a property, you need to subscribe to certain organisations. Settling into a home involves costs that are very important to plan for.
In the private sector, expect to pay an average of €1,200 in installation costs the first month, then €500 per month in rent.
Security deposit
The security deposit is an expense incurred at the beginning of the rental period, equivalent to 1 or 2 times your monthly rent. You pay it once when you move into the accommodation. It will be returned to you when you leave the property if nothing has been damaged and if all your rent has been paid. The security deposit is mandatory, even if you are staying in Crous accommodation.
Home Insurance
When you move into a property, whatever it may be (residence, flat-share, studio, etc.), you expose yourself to a number of risks: damage of all kinds, water damage, fire, theft, etc. Home insurance is a contract that enables you to cover these rental risks.
Home insurance is compulsory and costs an average of €4/month (the cost varies according to the insurance options selected). You must take out this insurance before moving into your home.
Guarantor
A guarantor is a natural or legal person who agrees to pay your rent in the event of non-payment. The guarantor must have sufficient income to pay his or her expenses as well as yours. If you don't have a guarantor in France, you have 2 options:
- Visale scheme: free and accessible to French and international students. This scheme is accepted by most student residences and some landlords. Visale is not open to minors or students over 30.
- Private schemes: You must pay a minimum of €150 per year but they are open to all.

Please note that most residences, including the Crous, do not have blankets, sheets, towels or dishes. You'll need to buy them on arrival. Some associations offer some of these supplies free of charge, but they are rare. Expect to spend at least €80 on sheets, blankets, towels and crockery when you arrive.
Housing Aid
Personalised housing aid (APL) is financial assistance designed to reduce your rent. It is granted for your principal residence in France, and only if your accommodation meets certain criteria of decency and minimum occupancy conditions. Your landlord must inform you that the property is "conventionné".
Who is eligible?
From 1 July 2026, international students from outside the European Union who do not receive a grant will no longer be eligible for APL. Students receiving grants, regardless of their nationality, as well as all students from the European Union, will remain fully eligible for APL.

How is the APL paid out?
As a general rule, the APL is paid directly to the landlord, who deducts it from the rent due.
The APL is due from the 1st day following the month of your application. You will therefore not receive any assistance for the first month of your stay. Payment is made every 5th day of the month.
Example: If you move in on October 15, your entitlement will be opened in November and the 1st payment will be made on December 5.
Processing times for your APL application vary from 1 to 3 months. You may therefore have to pay your rent in full for the first 3 months. Entitlement to the APL is not retroactive. Only the date on which you submit your application is taken into account. We therefore advise you to submit your APL application as soon as you move in.
Example 1: You move in on September 5 and submit your application in September. Your application will be processed in November, and you will receive your October and November subsidies in December (September is not taken into account).
Example 2: You move in on September 5 and apply in December. Your entitlement will open in December, but you will not be reimbursed for previous months (September, October, November).
