Designing a joint action plan for smart specialisation to ensure indoor air quality (IAQ) in classrooms
This project focuses on designing a joint action plan for smart specialisation in order to ensure indoor air quality (IAQ) in classrooms. IAQ plays a key role in public health and its importance has recently been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This project brings together multi-stakeholder organisations to address this societal issue.
3SqAir aims to develop a strategy to ensure optimal IAQ in educational buildings by implementing innovative, sustainable, smart solutions ranging from passive or active IAQ equipment to low-carbon technologies and changes in behaviour.
- The IAQ improvement strategy focuses not only on technical aspects, but on social factors such as user behaviour by offering educational activities to help make students more aware and involved. The two approaches are essential and complementary in order to improve IAQ, energy efficiency, health and well-being while addressing cross-cutting transnational challenges related to educational buildings.
- Transnational cooperation is needed to assess the impact of cultural, technical and legal aspects of the SUDOE space on the implementation of plans to improve IAQ.
- 3SqAir will establish a RIS3 strategy ensuring IAQ in classrooms by providing a methodological framework for classrooms, awareness-raising campaigns, a web platform for best practices and an open-source and open-hardware IoT platform.
- The project is based on pilot sites covering different levels of education. A community of experts will be brought together to create technology transfer and value for the various stakeholders.
- The innovative aspect of the project is the open-source IoT solution which will make it easier and less expensive to reproduce and can be continuously updated, unlike commercial software .
- The project also includes innovative methods for measuring the individual well-being of users in relation to IAQ.

Three year project from november 2020 to april 2023
This project is co-funded (75%) by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the Interreg Sudoe V Programme (2014-2020). The Sudoe programme supports regional development in southwest Europe by funding transnational projects through the ERDF fund. As such, it promotes transnational cooperation to address problems faced by all of the regions in the territory covered, such as a lack of investment in research and development, poor competitiveness of SMEs (small and medium-size enterprises) and exposure to climate change and environmental risks.
